‘Customer experience is our top priority’

Turkcell CEO Kaan Terzioglu considers new services as part of Turkcell’s larger effort to provide customers greater value throughout the day in alignment with the 1440 strategy. “As we design services and features relevant to our customers’ lives, and provide the best customer experience, the demand for our digital products and services continue to increase. Users appreciate the value they obtain from Yaani with 3 million search queries conducted daily. Digital Operator Turkcell Introduces Blockchain-applied ID Management Solution

Turkcell (NYSE: TKC) (BIST: TCELL), the world’s fastest growing digital operator, introduced its blockchain service for ID Management at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019. Blockchain is a new technology that allows organizations to collaborate in a safe environment. This technology can be used for more secure and faster transactions in the telecommunications industry - and Turkcell has successfully expanded the utilization of blockchain services to the industry with roaming clearance, ID management and donation solutions. Turkcell currently shares its blockchain network with Lifecell and Lifecell’s Belarus-based telecom operator partner BeST, and is in talks with study groups and other telecom operators to further expand the network.

Personal data is safer with Blockchain-applied ID Management solution

Turkcell is in the forefront of innovative solutions in personal privacy and data security with blockchain technology. Existing ID Management solutions requires users to create different accounts for different platforms or to use personal data the user shared with third parties before. The former requires the user to remember details of each account created, and the latter requires the user to share personal data with a third party not involved in the login process. Turkcell’s blockchain solution gives the user control over personal data and ensures personal privacy with GDPR compliant ID Management solution.

ID Management solution stores the information required for verification of users in the blockchain network and removes additional identity verifications – this also enables Turkcell to provide new use-cases to enterprises.

Donations can be made over Blockchain
Turkcell’s blockchain-enabled donation use-case incorporates ID Management solution to verify the donation eligibility of people in need. Turkcell helps rebuilding the trust in donation with a secure verification solution. The solution offers an end-to-end Turkcell experience – customers can donate via the communication and life platform BiP and use Paycell as a payment medium.

“Customer experience remains as top priority in the design of our services”

Turkcell Customer Experience and Information Technologies Executive Vice President Serkan Ozturk stated that customer experience must be in the center of technology to become a digital operator. “Our customers demand transparency and trust in every step of our processes. In this sense, using blockchain technology is essential to improve customer experience of our digital services and solutions, which remains as top priority in the design of our services. This is why we joined the global blockchain consortium of telecom carriers, The Carrier Blockchain Study Group (CBSG). Our blockchain solutions provide secure digital payments, barter systems, identity verification and IoT applications. These efforts will help us improve our digital services and raise the bar in customer experience,” he said.

MWC in Barcelona: This Year’s Focus is on ‘Intelligent Connectivity’

This year’s Mobile World Congress (which is now officially called MWC) will take place from Feb. 25 to 28 in Barcelona at the Fira Gran Via, Fira Montjuïc, and La Farga L’Hospitalet. Organizer GSMA expects that more than 107,000 professionals from over 200 countries and territories will attend.

Under the event theme of “Intelligent Connectivity,” MWC19 Barcelona will highlight the intersection of “hyperconnectivity,” enabled by 5G and the internet of things, and “intelligence,” delivered by artificial intelligence and big data. In addition to the core elements of intelligent connectivity, MWC19 will explore the key topics of Content, Digital Trust, Digital Wellness, and The Future.

“Underpinned by 5G and AI, intelligent connectivity is a major technological force that will shape how the world communicates well into the future,” said Michael O’Hara, Chief Marketing Officer, GSMA. “Attendees will get to experience the impact of intelligent connectivity firsthand across the conference and exhibition and the many programs and events taking place at MWC19 Barcelona.”

The GSMA has rebranded its flagship event series, moving from “Mobile World Congress” to “MWC,” a refresh that will be applied across all three global MWC events. The 2019 events will be referred to as MWC19 Barcelona, MWC19 Shanghai, and MWC19 Los Angeles.

O’Hara commented: “We are rapidly moving to a world where mobile will connect everyone and everything, but at the same time, we are expanding our reach beyond mobile. The new brand retains the familiar acronym while placing less emphasis on ‘mobile’ to reflect the broadening scope of communications today.”

MWC19 Barcelona will bring together leading players from across the mobile ecosystem, as well as adjacent industry sectors such as automotive and consumer electronics, showcasing the latest technologies, products, and services. More than 2,400 companies will participate at MWC19. The show floor will also include more than 40 country and regional pavilions.

One of the perennial favorites at MWC, the GSMA Innovation City, will put a spotlight on how intelligent connectivity — 5G, IoT, AI, and big data — is impacting and improving the lives of citizens, enterprises, and governments around the world. Visitors will experience intelligent connectivity across a range of sectors including entertainment, transportation, public services, and industry, among others, with demonstrations from partners Google, Huawei, KT Corporation, Sierra Wireless, and Turkcell, as well as GSMA industry and advocacy programs.

NEXTech Hall 8.0 is the destination for MWC19 attendees seeking cutting-edge technology trends, including AI, IoT, drones, robotics, and virtual reality/augmented reality (AR/VR), among others. NEXTech will feature several specialized technology areas, including the Drone Zone, the Graphene Pavilion, and the IoT Pavilion, alongside the NEXTech Lab, an open theater where leading industry players will present their latest innovations.

New for 2019, the GSMA will introduce “Digital Planet: The Connected Experience” in Hall 8.1, an evolution of App Planet, which has been a mainstay of MWC since 2010. Digital Planet will include over 200 app, ad tech, e-commerce, and marketing communication solution providers and other organizations focused on creating connected experiences and solutions that will positively impact citizens’ daily lives. Digital Turbine, Infobip, MessageBird, and Toyota are among the companies that will be showcased in Digital Planet, and Generalitat de Catalunya has been confirmed as the official sponsor.

4YFN is the innovation platform for MWC19 Barcelona, enabling startups, investors, and companies to connect and launch new business ventures together. The three-day event, scheduled for Feb. 25–27 at Fira Montjuïc, is expected to attract 21,000 attendees who will have the opportunity to meet the growing global tech startup community, take inspiration from onstage talks and workshops, and develop their skills in the newly designed Discovery Area.

Over 600 companies will be exhibiting at 4YFN, including startup delegations from Colombia, France, Greece, Hungary, Japan, Jordan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, among others. Sponsors for 4YFN include Banco Sabadell, Daimler, Intel, SEAT, and VISA, as well as public institutions from countries and territories including Japan, South Korea, Spain, and Taiwan.

The Women4Tech Programme is back in Barcelona with an expanded set of activities and events in its third year. Running across all four days of MWC19 Barcelona, Women4Tech is designed to address and reduce the gender gap in the mobile industry. A central element of the program is the Women4Tech Summit, with keynote presentations and panel discussions exploring topics such as gender equality and career development; mentoring and youth education; women in communication and vertical sectors; and women as entrepreneurs and innovators. In addition to the Summit, the Women4Tech Programme includes the Women4Tech Speed Coaching and Networking session; specialized MWC Tours; Women4Tech GLOMO awards for “Outstanding Achievement in Mobile Industry Leadership”; a Women4Tech panel on Mobile World Live TV; and Women4Tech activities at 4YFN.

The Youth Mobile (YoMo) Festival returns to Barcelona for its third year and is expected to attract approximately 25,000 attendees, including 22,000 school group attendees — nearly 85% more students than in 2018. A dedicated program designed to inspire young people to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering, art/design, and math (STEAM), YoMo will offer an array of educational exhibits, live theater shows, interactive workshops, and hands-on activities, as well as educator-focused workshops, lectures, and more. The 2019 edition of YoMo also includes the Enhanced Teacher Track, which focuses on digital transformation of the classroom. YoMo will be held Tuesday, Feb. 26, through Friday, March 1, at La Farga L’Hospitalet. Energytruck, the new mobile exhibition of Foundation Naturgy, has been confirmed as a corporate sponsor for the program.

The 2018 edition of MWC was officially certified as carbon-neutral by AENOR International, reiterating its position as the world’s largest carbon-neutral tradeshow. In 2019, the GSMA is focused on further reducing the environmental impact and carbon footprint of the event, offsetting any outstanding emissions as necessary. It will also extend the “Donation Room” program, through which MWC exhibitors donate used materials to Barcelona citizens at the end of the event. At the conclusion of the 2018 event, the GSMA collected 21.5 tons of building materials and 10 tons of furniture items and worked with the city councils of Barcelona and Hospitalet to provide them to more than 20 local socially responsible entities.

Turkcell to share success story at GSMA Mobile World Congress

Turkish mobile network giant Turkcell, the world's fastest growing mobile operator with its 1440 strategy for three years, will share its success story with the world at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2019.

Turkcell has taken its place at the GSMA Mobile World Congress, which is considered one of the world's largest technology fairs and will kick off in Barcelona, Spain, today.

At this year's gathering, the company is preparing to share the great progress it made in its digital exports move, which it announced at last year's Mobile World Congress, considered to be the most important meeting of the communication industry.

The mobile operator's "Turkcell/Lifecell" booth has been installed at Innovation City Hall 4, which has been dedicated to companies that develop their own most innovative technologies at the fair.

The booth will introduce the newest digital solutions and services developed in Turkey, as well as offering other services.

According to information provided by the company, last year's success story will be shared at the Turkcell/Lifecell booth.

Turkcell, the first mobile operator in the world to practice Lifecell's 1440 strategy, has managed to become the fastest growing mobile operator in the world in the last three years. The Turkcell Group's performance went beyond the objectives in 2018, increasing its 24-month revenue by 49 percent and 36-month revenue by 66.7 percent.

The company's 1440 strategy focuses on engaging with its customers in each of the 1,440 minutes of a day through its digital services. Turkcell said it saw 169 million downloads of its digital services in 2018.

Speaking about the company's strategy, Turkcell CEO Kaan Terzioğlu said, "We are the company with the shortest vision in the world which is DO-Digital Operator... Again, we are implementing the world's shortest strategy which is 1440... I mean, with the Digital Operator vision, we aim to offer digital services providing the best experience to our customers, and with the 1440 strategy, we aim to be with them at every moment of the day. For the past year, Lifecell has carried this vision and strategy to operators which need it all over the world."At the GSMA Mobile World Congress, where the key technologies of the future will be introduced, Turkcell will offer its digital services, developed by Turkcell's own engineers, such as BiP, fizy, TV+, Lifebox, Dergilik, Kopilot and Yaani.

In the meantime, the company announced last week that its revenues totaled TL 21.3 billion in 2018. Revenues rose by 20.8 percent year-on-year in the first 12 months of 2018, Turkcell said in a report.

Net profits for the GSM operator also rose by 2 percent to stand at TL 2 billion in the period. The company's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) reached TL 8.78 billion, corresponding to a 41.1 percent rise, it added.

The report showed that, as of the end of December, Turkcell subscribers in Turkey, Northern Cyprus, Ukraine, Belarus and Europe had reached 48.9 million.

The average U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate was 4.82 in 2018.

Turkcell spearheaded GSM-based mobile communication in Turkey when it started operations in 1994. Since then, it has continuously expanded its services based on mobile audio and data communication in Turkey and abroad.

Lifecell’s DO 1440 Strategy Transforms the Telecom Industry

As the first operator in the world to apply Lifecell’s 1440 strategy, Turkcell (NYSE:TKC) (BIST:TCELL) has become the fastest growing operator in the last 3 years with 49% bi-annual cumulative growth as of the end of Q4 2018.

We have the most concise vision, DO: Digital Operator, and strategy: 1440. Our digital operator vision allows us to offer digital services that offer the best customer experience and our strategy enables us to be with our customers for 1440 minutes in a day. Lifecell makes DO 1440 available to all operators around the world.”

5G CONNECTIVITY IN RURAL CITIES

The New Year will bring a major milestone for the mobile industry as global carriers will begin rolling out 5G service to millions of consumers. In addition to an influx of international carriers such as Telus Mobility, Entel and China Unicom, the four major U.S. carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint) have announced plans to launch 5G stateside. This presents the opportunity and challenge to connect people who live in rural areas to the new 5G network. It’s a unique challenge for large mass countries like as the U.S. where, according to American Communities Survey, people that reside in metropolitan areas are 10% more likely to have broadband internet access than those who live in rural areas.

While the overall goal of the industry is to bring this emerging technology to the masses, ensuring 5G is accessible to rural areas must remain a top priority as 5G is guaranteed improve the communities’ overall quality of life. Connectivity through 5G and IoT will be able to aid in catastrophes, epidemics and natural disasters, improve infrastructure as well improve economic growth and create more streamlined productivity.

This 5G era will disrupt our society, most notably our rural areas, in countless ways beginning in 2019 and beyond, including:

  • 5G on Telemedicine, Remote Surgeries: Healthcare is one of the most polarizing, critical issues, and the onset of 5G will provide more services in hard-to-reach areas with remote surgeries turning science fiction into reality. 5G will enable doctors to “operate” on patients that may be thousands of miles away with the network’s low latency in tow. Additionally, 5G will pave the way for more patient monitoring technologies that will aid chronically ill patients that are limited in mobility.
  • 5G on Agriculture: Mobile IoT, as a result of 5G, will aid in increased crop production, crop quality and livestock management through enhanced monitoring of soil conditions, improved use of pesticides and fertilizers, animal welfare, and weather conditions. In addition, 5G will pave the way for connected drones to become common use, enhancing crop spraying, land management and aerial surveillance. And when crops are ready to head to market from these urban areas, connected vehicles will be able to increase efficiency of distribution through optimal routing and monitoring of temperature control of food in transit.
  • 5G on Shopping: In rural areas, packages require extra time to arrive to customers. 5G will speed up this process by enabling drone delivery, which could help packages arrive in as little as an hour for a low cost.

The arrival of flexible, high performance 5G networks along with the increasing integration of artificial intelligence and the IoT will enable continuous market opportunities for rural areas and beyond, ultimately connecting everyone and everything to a better future.

Watch GSMA’s Head of North American Operations, Ana Tavares Lattibeaudiere, discuss more of the above on how 5G will transform our world through enterprise, education and more.
